I've been to this location for early breakfast and lunch (more for early breakfast, though) because you can always guarantee a table. This Zippy's is smaller than some of the others, and service isn't necessarily fast (there only seems to be one waitress during all of my visits). But, at least the staff is friendly.
The way this restaurant is configured is slightly odd, just because the bakery counter/pastry selection is outside of the dine-in section of the restaurant. Once we are seated in a booth, I always end up leaving the table and going outside and to the right to check out the featured baked goods (namely, the donuts and Napples). I know for a while they were doing construction/renovations on this Zippy's location (to fix up the express/to-go area). I'm just glad there is an adjacent parking lot! For breakfast, I normally get some sort of pastry with coffee. But, Zippy's never disappoints in their plate lunch selection for both lunch and dinner.
Again, this is a central location to visit and I often find myself in the Kalihi area. Just be prepared for a wait (if they're short staffed) and limited seating (if they are busy), but otherwise, the food has always been consistent and I was always happy with what I ordered. Here are some of my favorites: Chocolate Napple: I know Zippy's is known for their apple Napples, but the chocolate Napples have always been a favorite of mine. I love the thin layer of chocolate filling, which is like molten chocolate if the Napple is served hot.
And, the thin flaky pastry layers never disappoint. I've had the Napples both at room temperature and warmed up before (for breakfast); I like it both ways, but when it's warmed up, it goes really well with coffee.
And I do like Zippy's coffee - especially unlimited refills on the hot coffee. Chili: You can't ever go wrong with Zippy's chili. On a rainier day, the boyfriend was craving comfort food so we wound up at Zippy's and he got a big bowl of their chili. Chili (even Zippy's version) tends to make me gassy, so I steer clear. But he liked how it came loaded with lots of onions and cheese for toppings. I heard you can order the beanless chili as well, so maybe I'll get that next time. A steaming bowl of Zippy's chili always hits the spot on a cooler day or rainy evening.
Reese's Peanut Butter Donut: I'm not sure if this donut is available at all Zippy's; it wasn't here during one of my breakfast trips but I was happy to see it in the bakery display case during my next breakfast venture. This yeast donut is my favorite from the Zippy's selection. It's topped with chocolate frosting and lots of chopped up Reese's Peanut Butter Cups.
Reese's is my favorite candy so I appreciate the strong peanut butter flavor from this donut. Chantilly/Dobash Cake: If you're in the mood for cake and just want dessert, the dobash never disappoints. I don't eat dobash often, but I really like the version from Zippy's - it's light yet still very chocolaty. On a recent visit, I ordered a slice of Chantilly cake. It was light as well and I liked the frosting, but I think I still prefer the Chantilly from Liliha Bakery (the piece is bigger and there's a ton of frosting).
However, I didn't feel really heavy after eating this cake. My husband and I have been to this location numerous only because we live 2 minutes away. Tonight after work, we decided to dine here in the take out side.
It wasn't busy at all but it normally isn't at 1am. We waited at the window for a couple of minutes until a worker noticed us. He was nice, he just didn't smile.
My husband ordered the mini spaghetti(picture below)and I had the zip pac minus the teri beef (because I don't eat beef) with extra hoki fish instead (no picture, I forgot!). When my husband peeped into the garlic bread bag, he was surprised to see what seemed to look like a regular toasted bread with butter on it. I told him I wanted to see it and man was it a thin piece of bread. I swear the last time I ordered that it came with real garlic bread, none of that knock off pieces of regular bread. As for my zip pac, it was pretty good.
The chicken was super crispy which I love! The breaded hoki fish tasted good too, I'm just glad it wasn't Mahi Mahi. Spam looked a little pale, but whatever I ate it anyway. Even if my husband received a knock off garlic bread, I'd still come here. I refuse to drive anywhere out of my way. Super busy even at this late of a Time. And I find myself ordering for 7 people.
We just left the Honolulu City Lights and instead of paying for food there we decided to actually eat a full meal here at Zippy's. So it's a little busy and we're waiting in line maybe about 20 minutes or so and then we order. Our food comes in about 15 minutes and everything looks good except the one kids meal that I ordered for a chicken katsu.
It looks like they just threw a bunch of cut katsu all over the little Bento plates. I want to show the manager sleep and she also agreed that the presentation of the plate was not by far their best work she offered it to make it again for me. The family was enjoying their meal as I waited for the last plate about 20 minutes went by of course everybody was winding down from their food and I picked off of everyone's food and then we're about to leave and I went up to the window and asked for my food she apologized again but for some reason it wasn't communicated with the back so the order was not made. I just asked for my money and left. Very disappointed with tonight's service. I waited over 30 minutes for my MINI Chili and Chicken plate and on top of that, everyone who order after us were called before us?
I always order this so I know how much portion is given but when I opened my plate there was hardly ANY CHILI! It's not even a full scoop more like 1/4 of a scoop. We took it to go but if I was still there. I would have returned it immediately. Also the manager on duty tonight was rude. Rolled her eyes when we wanted to add on something like it was an inconvenience for her.
Won't be back for awhile. I usually eat at the Makiki Zippy's, so when I eat at another Zippy's location, I am foolish to expect the same level of service. Honestly, no two Zippy's are alike. Yesterday, my mom and I had an errand to run in the Kapalama area, so we decided to grab lunch at Zippy's in the Kapalama Shopping Center on Dillingham Blvd. The Kapalama Zippy's has dine-in and take-out available, which makes it really convenient. We decided to dine-in because the heat was sweltering yesterday and the dine-in area was blasting the A/C.

The food all tasted the same, but the service wasn't what I expected. I'm not sure if they were shorthanded yesterday, but service was so slow there.
We got seated right away, but our waitress took forever and a day to make it to our table. Again, perhaps they were shorthanded, but the table next to us ended up leaving because the waitress took too long. They had some place they had to be. End result, if you have a limited time to eat, then consider the take-out side because the dine-in side is slow.
Other than that, the food is same as with other Zippy's. I work 1 minute away from Zippy's Dillingham. This location is in the Kapalama Shopping Center. Zippy's is known for local favorites: Chili (my personal favorite), Fried Chicken, Korean Fried Chicken, MAC SALAD & of course their Zip Pac. Take-Out Service (Not Dine-In): This location is a hit or miss.
Depending on which Aunties are working & how hot it is (they have no AC) - you'll either receive A-OK service or service with plenty Aloha. Food: Today, I ordered the Breakfast Bento #3 - Portuguese Sausage, Corned Beef Hash, Scrambled Eggs & Rice ($4.50).

Parking: There is a parking lot (since it's a shopping center) but during lunch time the lot is crazy. There is about 10 other restaurants that share this small lot. This is the worst Zippy's I ever been to. First off we get there and it takes the hostess about 15 minutes to acknowledge that we are there and seat us. Mind you it's not that busy.
Once we get our tables and menus, we are sat there for 20 min and not one server acknowledged our existence. Not even give water or any greeting. We got up and left passing many tables with dishes that weren't cleaned and a long line of people waiting to be served. What a shame!
I am giving them no stars! I will always go to Nimitz and get excellent service! With the holiday season here there is a lot of bah humbug and not to much holly jolly up in this place!
When you're a tourist coming to Hawaii, you'll never understand why Zippy's is the bomb. As a local oh you'll know, if you're home sick. First stop Zippy's fix! With many many locations on this island. You're bound to find one. Open 24/7 what's not to love?!
This location specifically has the worst service. They are located in the Kapalama shopping center. Waiters sometimes take forever or they just never come back and you'll wonder. It isn't that busy.
I come to this location because there's more parking compared to Nimitz and both closer to where I live. Plus if you don't want Zippy's dessert you can go to Magnolia ice cream, if it's still open. I usually get my Korean chicken with mash potatoes but this time I got 2 eggs (scrambled), Portuguese sausage, link sausage and hash brown. Comfort food!
I still come back here cause Zippy's food cannot be beat.
