Luckily, one of my fave game playing partners is also a TA, and we shoot away. I'm looking for: classic pencil and paper games, and games that can be played on simple boards that you can print out, with pencil and paper. Most connection games can be played that way. I've already passed through endless amounts of surrealist/absurdist hangman (words like: 'ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ' and 'Q') and have managed to find some good connection games, that are holding interest.

But I need fresh blood. Below are what I play, including two new Tic Tac Toe variants that I made up today and proceeded to play, with some satisfaction, for three hours. If anybody wants to help me tweak those, try 'em out and comment. Uh, and, yeah, I need more pencil and paper games, beyond what's in Sid Sackson's Gamut of Games. I'm going crazy back there. Suggest away. For some reason, I can't get into Dots and Boxes.

Two variants I made up this morning for Tic Tac Toe (with a few unplayable ones in the graveyard on the way) that turn out to be of some interest. I've played each about 20 or 30 times now - no obvious pure-win/draw strategy yet. EXPANDA-TOE Setup: draw a standard 3x3 Tic Tac Toe board.

Win: First to make FOUR in a row - horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, wins. Play is as in in standard TTT, with one addition: you may play in a square outside the board PROVIDED THAT your play is.orthogonally.

(horizontally or vertically, not diagonally) adjacent to AT LEAST ONE of your opponent's marks. It turns out to be pretty brutally computational - rather like DVONN, in a way - but fun. The board expands pretty quickly, but the play outside of the central grid, constrained as it is, turns out to be interesting. Since every play of yours enables your opponent to play into new ground, which will in turn enable you to play into new ground, this one involves a lot of visual imagination and ability to see spaces opening up in your head. Vaguely, vaguely, vaguely reminscent of the feel of El Caballero, in that respect.

My only fear is that play will devolve into not making mistakes. I've managed to pull off a few interesting forces. Still, definitely better than traditional tic tac toe - but, then again, so is three-day-old Big Mac. Variation 2: DEMOLITION TIC TAC TOE This begins with the rules of Expanda-toe, presented above, and adds the following: Whenever your marks orthogonally surround an enemy's mark on three sides (again, horizontal, vertical, but not diagonal), on your turn, instead of placing a new mark, you may choose to.demolish. that surrounded piece. That means the square is blacked out and is permanently out of the game. It cannot be used to build off of as you leave the grid (though you can build around it).

Furthermore: once a demolition occurs, check to see if all off-grid plays can be connected via orthogonal connections to the original grid. (The connection can make as many right turns as it needs). Any marks that have been disconnected are immediately demolished. (This rule inspired by DVONN). This game is even more brutal and vicious, a bit less calculational-feeling, and kind of neat.

Twice in early games somebody managed to threaten a demolition of one of the outer pieces on the original 3x3 grid, and then, by demolishing at a later, key point, wiped out a large amount of the off-grid pieces. This feels a little more chess-y go-y, with threats, counter-threats, and weirdness. Already, play felt less like Expanda-toe's avoid-mistakes-to-win. Download film avatar the legend of korra book 4 episode 12.

A little more possibility, thus far, to pull off neat moves, demolitions, and such - though it is much more chaotic than the previous game. Wins tend to happen quicker - though this may just because we got more into demolishing squares and stopped blocking as carefully, and gave away wins more. Definitely fun, though - at least if you're trapped in the back of a classroom, and not allowed to skip out at the cost of your job. Anyway, if anybody wants to play this, give me feedback, show that these are solved games, or vary these variants, feel free.
