Or read our to learn how to use this site. Specs: Dell Optiplex 755 Core 2 Quad Windows XP Pro SP3 x86 ADI 198x Integrated HD Audio (Soundmax I believe, forgive me if its just the software) Problem: I am trying to install the driver for the sound but it still says that no audio device is present.
- Use the links on this page to download the latest version of SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio drivers. All drivers available for download have been scanned by antivirus program.
- I ran the windows vista upgrade advisor, and under the category of 'sound, video, and game controllers', SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio came up as may not having drivers for vista. I didn't see any thing about vista drivers on the website. Soundmax is pretty big though, so I assume that drivers are going to be made.
Steps I've Taken: 1. I've installed the hotfix for hd audio from Windows. I've uninstalled all the drivers that I could find that is related to the sound drivers. I've tried installing the drivers two ways, with the installer and one through the 'update driver' option in device manager. I've also tried using tools such as drivermax to install the drivers. They have this little utility that works like windows update but for your drivers. Weird Points: The device that I was trying to install used to come up in device manager.

Now it doesn't show up at all whether I search for it or google my problem to try to get it back on there. The basic stuff comes up such as legacy sound device.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. You can delete the installed drivers through Device Manager and reboot and see if Windows will offer a default driver. I had a similar issue with a Compaq I recently repaired and after days of installing every SoundMax driver package I could find the sound never did work. Some of the drivers were not correct and showed yellow exclamations in DM and some would appear to be correct (no yellow!' S) but the sound device refused to be recognized by Windows. My suggestion - find a SoundBlaster on sale and stick it in an open PCI slot.

Also I did not see this in your post, have you ran the Dell Diagnostic scan? Enter your service tag # at this link and see what the scan has to say.
Machines listed in the description here (Dimension 2350, Optiplex S-260.); none of the ones I checked was ever shipped by Dell with Win 98 - only with Win 2000 and Win XP. I believe that in the past this driver may have supported SE, that it was adapted rather casually when applied to these machines, and that the person who uploaded it here simply clicked the Win98SE choice by mistake.
This is likely a good driver for the supported OS's on those machines and even perhaps for Win XP on other Intel 845G-series chipset machines but it is not useful for Win98SE. However for Dell machines running supported OS's, the place to look is Dell's web site. Searching 'Dell support (machine model)' will get you there quickly.'
